Traditionally, well-behaved children are surprised with small gifts by St Nicholas, who goes from house to house, while naughty children are frightened by Krampus. Krampus parades also take place in villages and towns, organised by traditional groups. These parades are well worth a visit as the Krampuses wear hand-carved masks.
